Why Sandy Pup

Sandy Pup started in San Diego with one question every dog owner asks before heading out: can we go there today? The answer was scattered over city codes, park websites and signs at the gate, and it changed with the season and the hour.

So we built one place to look. The places come from OpenStreetMap, the map the world draws together. The dog rules come from the agencies that set them: city, county and state park codes and official pages, read and cited, with the day we checked them.

It is made by a small team of dog people, not an agency, and it stays free. When a sign says something else, the sign wins: tell us, and we fix it.

How we know

Rules from city, county and state park agencies, checked against their official pages.

  • Every rule names its source, and shows which source decides when they disagree.
  • Seasonal rules switch on the right date, in the place's own time zone.
  • We never guess: when no source states a rule, we say “unknown”.

Check posted signs. They are the rule on site.

Sources

Every source behind what you see, by name, with a link.

All sources

The places, their outlines and most dog rules come from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License. Our place database is built from it, so it is open under the same licence. We put the map's tags into plain words; where another source decides a rule, the place page says so under “How we know”.

How dog hours work

Many beaches welcome dogs only at certain times of day or year. Here is how the day looks right now at one of them.

The five dog rules

Each place on the map has one of five dog rules, in its colour and with its icon:

  • Off-leash Dogs may be off the leash, under your control.
  • Leash required Dogs are welcome on a leash.
  • Dogs allowed Dogs are welcome; the leash rule is not stated, so follow the local leash law.
  • No dogs Dogs are not allowed.
  • Dog rules unknown No source we use states a rule for this place yet.
  • Hour limits: the colour is the rule now
